Clala Project

Tomoyo Yamada is an interdisciplinary artist in performance art and choreography. Born in Japan and educated in the United States, she has spent most of her life traveling between North America and Japan, negotiating distinct cultural identities. Her practice is influenced by her ongoing research into identity politics and her self-reflexive interrogation of transnational cultural differences. She recently completed her Master of Fine Arts degree at Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts.

Tomoyo has been presenting works in various festivals such as Dance Cafe, International Dance Day at the Dance Centre, Open Stage, Dancing on the Edge Festival, Vines Art Festival, and REVERBdance Festival. 

Charlotte Telfer-Wan is a contemporary dance artist, artistic producer, and kinesiologist respectfully working on the land and home of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh(Tsleil-Waututh) Nations in Vancouver BC.

Her artistic work focuses on interactive and multidisciplinary performance art, often in the form of installations. Charlotte's work shifts the framework of how an audience experiences dance, creating without boundaries between the stage and spectators, and encouraging the decommodification of dance and dancers. Her movement has a strong foundation in modern dance, with further exploration of release technique and floorwork.

Recently she has been exploring how classical dance can relate to music and movement integrated with party or rave culture. Charlotte completed her Bachelors of Fine Art with Honors in Contemporary Dance at Simon Fraser University with a minor in Kinesiology. She trained in contemporary and modern dance styles such as Graham, Limon, and Cunningham techniques. Since 2019 she has been co-producing Clala Project. As well, she has created performances presented at Shambhala Music Festival, The Squamish Art Walk, Burning Man, Chalk it Up!, Festival of Recorded Movement (FORM), and Impact by Kylah Powell.

Sam (he/him) is a filmmaker, projection designer, and learning and outreach coordinator. He graduated from Simon Fraser University with a BFA in Film Production in the SFU School for the Contemporary Arts.

His projects frequently engage with theatre, dance, and the possibilities of film beyond the static cinema screen. His films and film productions have screened at the FORM Film Festival, the Polygon Gallery, and the Chilliwack International Film Festival.

As a coordinator in the Learning & Outreach area of The Cinematheque, Sam facilitates the teaching of filmmaking in a variety of workshops, and hopes to encourage an exploration of interdisciplinary cinema and a general love of film in future generations.
